John H.Schwarz was born in 1941 in North Adams, Massachusetts. His parents,both Hungarian,had left Europe the previous year. They were trained as scientists and helped stimulate John's interest in mathematics and science from an early age. John Schwarz received his bachelor's degree from Harvard in 1962 and his Ph.D in physics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1966. Schwarz was an instructor and an assistant proffessor at Princeton University during the period 1966-1972. In 1972 he moved to the California Institute of Technology. From 1972-1985 his title was Research Associate,but in Appril 1985 he was appointed Proffessor of Theoretical Physics. John's other interests include outdoor activities such as swimming, tennis,and hiking in the mountains. Joe Polchinski received his Ph.D from the University of California at Berkeley in 1980. After postdoctoral fellowships at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and Harvard,he joined the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin in 1984, moving to his present position of Proffessor of Physics at the University of California at Santa Barbara,and Perma- nent Member of the Institute for Theoretical Physics,in 1992. |
